Duck House Makeover with Green Paint, and a Disco Ball
When the ducks started quacking complaints about their cramped quarters in the storage room, we knew it was time for an upgrade. They had turned into little feathery squatters, clearly dissatisfied with their makeshift home among the paint cans, and garden tools.
So, we decided to give them the dream home they deserved.
To this end, the requirements were simple:
Spacious
Airy (no heatstrokes for the ducks, thank you very much)
Fabulous
While ambitious, these edicts do not for a detailed blueprint make, so we did what any responsible duck owner would do and found a great reference online…in German.
It was a good start. Then we wanted to add a mesh enclosure to make the entryway feel just a little more secure for the ducks - something like the image below.
Then, because we had no woodworking skills at all between us, we hired a professional to help us put it together. Our carpenter rolled up with large pieces of plywood and, using extra green mesh we had leftover from the garden’s fences, put the whole thing together in just two days.
Next, it was time to give the duckhouse a little more personality.
We painted the duck house green to blend in with the morning glories in the backyard. The walkway roof, however, got a coat of white paint to match a small white flower planter we hung on the front door. In the planter - a bright red geranium for a splash of colour.
Then for the interior, we filled the bottom of the roost with clean hay, and added a little white water trough. We also took ‘family style’ photos with the ducks, framed them, and hung them up on the walls. We even included a “duck warning” photo featuring our cat, Pepper, just to keep things interesting.
The piece de resistance: a disco ball- because what home is complete without one?
End result:
We’re pretty happy with it….and the ducks seemed pretty pleased, too.
